8:45	Data Science - A Data are all around you Visualizing Data	We are using Mobilize Technology as the framework for this module. Data are a collection of digitally recorded observations. Data can be gathered by people and by sensors. Patterns in data can reveal previously unknown patterns in our world. In-class Exercise: How old are you? How old is one person in the class? How old is the class? What about interpreting information based on really large sets of data? bits to bytes to ... Just for fun: Scale of the Universe What is "Big Data"? Discussion: What kind of digital data do YOU generate? Let's get started with the tool we'll use to capture and explore some data sets. Visit the Mobilize Trash Campaign and answer the following questions: Which kind of trash was most reported: "landfill" or "recyclable"? Does your answer depend on if person was at home or at school? Does your answer depend on what activity the person was doing? Does your answer depend on a specific area of Los Angeles? Did people throw away and recycle the same kinds of items? What else does the data tell you?

10:00	Data Science - B Participatory Sensing What's our data telling us?	In this unit, we'll collect some data for ourselves and then interpret it. (Here is the general link to the dashboard, as needed.) Discussion: Think about the kind of posts that show up in your facebook feed. What is more common: photos, text or videos? WHat kind of post gets the most likes? most comments? Are the posts original posts or shared posts? Time to see if the data supports our hypotheses about this! We have prepared a survey to collect data on characteristics of recent posts to your feed. Open the FB Survey Instructions for how to take the survey and share your results. Discussion: Given our results, what would be some other questions we could ask? Discussion: How does Facebook use the data of everybody's feed? Facebook Engineering Video: Data Science incorporates computer science, modeling, statistics, analytics, and mathematics.
