Case Studies in Operating Systems.

 

Select, Research, Prepare and Present an Operating System.

 

Form Groups - no more than 3 students per group (email Iyengar for approval - the group members and OS selected by class-time 11/17 – approval on FCFS to avoid duplicates).

 

Fall 2020:                                            Presentations will be on 12/1 & 12/3

 

Approved OS:             MS-DOS, Z-OS, Embedded Sys for Telescope, Android, CubeOS

 

 

 

·         Select an Operating system – Academic or Commercial or Experimental. Get it approved from the instructor.

·         Describe its history and its current status.

·         Identify and list the goals, as described by the developer(s), of the operating system.

·         Describe the implementation scheme – organizational structure of the system.

·         Identify and list the strengths/advantages of the system. Identify hardware/platform dependencies – if any.

·         Identify and list the weakness/limitations of the system.

·         Identify and describe the policies of a) Process Scheduling, b) Memory Management, and c) Secondary Storage Management.

·         List the sources/references for your OS.

·         Prepare a report – discussing the topics listed above – and submit it on the day of your presentation. The report should be typed, single spaced and not more than 5 pages.

·         This report should be presented – in a summary form to the class. The presentation will be for 15-20 minutes, with time for questions for 5 additional minutes.
