Course Description

Hurricane Katrina has raised important questions about race, racism, socioeconomic class, and poverty in the United States . In addition, this catastrophe has raised complex questions about security, environmental impact and governmental funding priorities.  Students explored these and other questions as they related directly to the city of New Orleans , Louisiana. [Course syllabus]

Learning Outside the Class Room

"Evaluating the time spent in New Orleans, doing relief work and other activities, I can say it was an experience like no other. With the readings from class alone, I developed a great perspective of the disaster, far better than I ever would have had by merely watching the news. However, actually going down to New Orleans and experiencing the culture, talking to people about their experiences, and taking part in service work, allowed me the ability to form a deeper connection than I would have had in the class alone."
